Mobile Unit will bring driver’s license and ID services on Tuesday, Aug. 20

The Knoxville Area Urban League will host a Tennessee Driver’s License Mobile Unit on Tuesday, Aug. 20, to provide licensing and state identification services to the community.

The unit will be available from 1-4 p.m. at the Knoxville Area Urban League’s headquarters, located at 1514 E. 5th Ave. Services will include state ID cards, learner’s permits, new driver’s licenses, renewal of driver’s licenses and on-site driver’s license testing. State fees for these services will apply.

“Access to a current, government-issued ID is essential for many jobs, but often difficult to obtain for someone who may not have their own vehicle or faces other challenges,” said Terrence Carter, vice president of workforce and economic development for the Knoxville Area Urban League. “We are helping to solve some basic barriers to employment, and our workforce development team provide tools like the mobile unit to the people who would benefit.”

The mobile unit also will offer Real IDs as part of the federal government’s new standard of having a Real ID gold star on the right side of all driver’s licenses. In Tennessee, beginning Oct. 1, 2020, all people must have a REAL ID license to board commercial flights within the United States, access certain federal buildings and enter nuclear facilities.

The workforce development team schedules the mobile unit several times a year to provide access to services that are difficult to reach by bus or public transit. In addition to ID and license services, legal personnel will be available on-site to answer questions related to these topics.

Services are provided in partnership with the Tennessee Child Support Employment & Parenting Program (TCSEPP) and the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Last year, the mobile unit administrators noted that partnering with the local Urban League brought more visitors to the unit than any other month. This year, the Knoxville Area Urban League seeks to serve more than 100 people during the three-hour event.
