Workshops and Classes Offered by the Knoxville Area Urban League

Fall and Winter 2007-2008

Workshops  

  1. Budget and Credit Workshop -- Offered throughout the year. These workshops help our clients understand their personal spending habits and give them guidance and tools to work with to control their daily spending habits. The fee of $20 covers instructional materials.

  1. Homeownership  -- Offered throughout the year. The KAUL collaborates with local housing development agencies to assist first time home buyers. Each three-session workshop details the steps involved in selecting, purchasing, financing and maintaining a home. These workshops are geared especially towards low to moderate income families. The fee of $20 covers instructional materials.

  2. Job Readiness– This four week class is offered monthly Monday – Friday from 830-1230pm throughout the year. The objective is to prepare students who are unemployed or underemployed gain a basic knowledge of the computer. Along with this basic computer class, there is a one week Job Readiness class and a one week internship. A career assessment is given to students before they enter the class. Students learn the following from this class: windows basics, organizing files, working with files, browsing the web and electronic mail; this prepares students for completing online applications, preparing a resume, writing cover letters and writing thank you letters. The fee of $10 covers instructional materials.

  3. Advanced Computer – These classes are offered from time to time by special arrangement.

 

Classes

  1. Entrepreneurship & small business management -- Offered from September 5 through October 31 at 530-7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The objective of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the entrepreneurial process, the role of the entrepreneur in the United States economy and the opportunities, challenges and rewards of being an entrepreneur and creating a new business. The class is case oriented and active participation in class is expected.

Textbook: Entrepreurship 6th edition by Hirsch and others.

The class will be offered again in March and April 2008.

  1. Personal Finance -- Offered from November 5 thru December 5 at 530-7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The objective of the course is to educate students about a number of financial issues dealing with their personal financial situation. These will include at least the following topics: financial aspects of career planning; the time value of money; money management and budgeting; consumer credit; housing decisions; the role of life insurance, health insurance and disability insurance; estate planning issues; investing fundamentals; retirement plan options including the 401K/403b and Ira options; bankruptcy law changes; and other topics of interest.

    Textbook: Personal Finance 7th edition by Kapoor and others.

The class will be offered again in May 2008.

  1. Investing 101 -- Offered from January 2 through February 27 at 530-7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The objective of the course is to help students understand the fundamentals of investing in the financial markets. A primary aim of the course is to make investing easier for the layman to understand by carefully explaining the terms used in investing, by explaining alternative investment opportunities and by explaining the techniques the professionals use to value various investments. Specialized knowledge is not required; but a commitment to learn the material is.

The class will cover investing in stocks, bonds and other fixed income instruments, mutual funds, and non financial assets.

Textbook: Investments -- an introduction 8th edition by Mayo.

 

A fee of $100 is charged for each class.
