The Knoxville Area Urban League is authorized for operation as a postsecondary education institution by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

Homeownership Workshop – This workshop, open to anyone preparing to purchase their first home, covers the details involved in selecting, purchasing, financing and maintaining a home and meets all requirements for FHA loans. Classes are offered as a three-session workshop on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon or on the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, as outlined in the schedule below.

Budget and Credit Course – This four-week workshop helps participants understand their spending habits and make wise spending choices so that they can save money and meet long-term goals. Classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

There is no cost to participate.
Basic Skills Computer Class – This class, geared toward adults who are unemployed or underemployed, includes pre-testing to assess skill levels and career interests and basic computer instruction. It also provides instruction on job readiness skills, such as workplace ethics, corporate culture, relating to coworkers, and appropriate dress and behavior. The class concludes with a three-day internship.
Cost: $10 for instructional materials.
Introduction to Excel - This course provides instruction on Excel basics, such as organizing a worksheet, worksheet formulas and worksheet charts.
Cost: $10 for instructional materials
Customer Service Class - This highly interactive course includes training on communication, customer relationships and technical skills. There is no cost to attend, but participants must first pass pre-testing and agree to attend all three sessions.
Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management – Course instruction covers topics such as how to prepare a business plan; marketing; identifying your competition; forecasting numbers; how to price; how to pay sales tax; and how to set up your business, i.e., a sole proprietorship or LLC. Course sponsor: Suntrust Bank. Cost: $40.

Personal Finance – This four-week course educates students about a number of personal financial issues, including financial aspects of career planning; the time value of money; money management and budgeting; consumer credit; housing decisions; the role of life insurance, health insurance and disability insurance; estate planning issues; investing fundamentals; retirement plan options including the 401K/403b and IRA options; bankruptcy law changes; and other topics of interest.
This course is scheduled based on demand.
Investing 101 – This six-week course helps students understand the fundamentals of investing in the financial markets. A primary aim of the course is to make it easier for the layman to understand investing by carefully explaining investment terminology, alternative investment opportunities, and techniques that professionals use to value various investments. Specialized knowledge is not required, but students must be committed to learning the materials.
The class will cover investing in stocks, bonds and other fixed income instruments, mutual funds, and non financial assets.
